Long Term Care

As we head toward retirement, there are some unknowns that could really wreck the plans we have made for ourselves.  First of all we can outlive our money.  People are living longer these days and as we continue to find new medicines and new cures, our life expectancy could continue to rise.  Secondly, we don't know how much money health care is going to cost us, especially if we require long term care due to being chronically disabled.

Today, 6.4 million people 65 or older need long term care.  One in two people over age 85 require long term care.

The National Average Cost of a Nursing Home is almost $70,000 per year.  The average length of stay in a Nursing Home is 2.4 years.  Costs are expected to QUADRUPLE in the next 30 years.

Keep in mind the average stay now is 2.4 years.  That means many people are staying in facilities much longer as we continue to discover new medicines and help people live longer.  If you needed to be in a facility for more than 5 or 10 years, how much would that shrink your retirement funds?  You may be forced to sell assets to support yourself when the market timing is not good.

The costs to a family are more than just financial.  Caring for a loved one can overwhelm even the most devoted family member.  Families can be scattered across the county.  Finally, not everyone wants a family member to be their primary caregiver.

There is a solution.  Long Term Care can help preserve your income and your assets.  Long Term Care Coverage can fund your care needs.

Long Term Care Protection can allow you to decide who will be the primary caregiver and where you will receive that care.  Long Term Care Insurance provides choices for you.  It allows you to choose where you want your care to be administered and offers you the choice and flexibility as to who provides that care for you.

Let us help you protect yourself and your family for your Long Term Care Needs.  We will help you determine what policy is right for you.

Doesn't Medicare or Medicaid cover me for Long Term Care?

Long Term Care isn't covered by Medicare and Long Term Care coverage also does not replace your Medicare Coverage.

Medicaid will pay for some long term care, however, there are restrictions on an individual's assets to qualify as well as a limited choice of facilities.  The facility and the care that you want may not take Medicaid. Even if they accept Medicaid, there could be charges that are not covered. In Arizona the current limit on income is $1911 per month.  You are also limited to having $2000 in resources (cash, bank accounts, stocks, bonds, etc) if you are single.  If you are married, the spouse can keep up to a maximum of $104, 400).  Additionally, recovery of dollars spent on your Long Term Care by Medicaid can be obtained from your estate.

Key Questions you need to ask yourself to determine what Long Term Care Policy is right for you.

  1. Where do you want your care? Home or at a facility?
  2. Who do you want to provide the care? Family member, Professionals in your home, Facility Employees?
  3. Amount of Daily Benefit?
  4. How long after you have been determined to be chronically ill do you want to wait to have your benefits begin? 60, days, 90 days, longer?
  5. How long do you want benefits to be paid? Two years, five years, ten years, unlimited?
  6. Include Simple or Compound Interest Inflation?

There are more options but these are the primary ones to think about to begin the decision process.
